“We need to ensure better air quality in our neighborhoods especially those with a mix of industrial areas and environmental justice communities like Red Hook, which has seen a spike in e-commerce facilities and truck congestion, in addition to the pollutants coming from the Gowanus Expressway and Hugh Carey Tunnel. Thanks to the funds coming from the American Rescue Plan and the Inflation Reduction Act, the Red Hook community and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation will have the ability to better monitor air quality and help improve the health of our City’s neighborhoods.” - Representative Nydia Velázquez

Community Sensor Lab is a collaboration where young adults and community members share stories about health and hazards in the fenceline community of Red Hook, Brooklyn. Collaborators go through a training program to hone their programming and data analysis skills as they learn about, install and maintain air quality sensors. These sensors track daily measurements in locations of environmental concern throughout the census district, providing open-source data for advocacy that residents in the neighborhood have direct access to.
